Winter Trend Alert
We’ve got the scoop on the top trends this winter, and bagged you a chance to win a €100 Brown Thomas voucher!
It would seem that winter has finally hit us here in Ireland, yes, technically it has been here for a while but we all know we’ve been ignoring it. This morning I swapped my leather jacket for my wool coat so figured it’s a good opportunity to have a look at the trends in the shops this winter. It’s perfect timing too as we’re currently running a lovely competition to win a €100 Brown Thomas voucher courtesy of the fine folks over at Cameo Communications. But enough natter, let’s get down to business.
According to the ever fashion-forward Shelly Corkery, Fashion Director at Brown Thomas, you can expect to see 6 hot trends in store this season – Sculptural Silhouettes, Fairy Tale Fantasy, Symbol of Femininity, Genderless, Urban Streets, and Global Traveller. For those who like muted shades in neutral colours adding a bit of oomph by playing with silhouette is a no-brainer. Think pleating, draping, and defined waist with voluminous wools and coats.
If you’re thinking neutrals, no thanks! Then it’s time to play with fabrics and embrace all things romantic. Fall back in love with the brothers Grimm by swathing yourself in silks, laces, and prints. Taking inspiration from Dolce & Gabanna, this style is perfect for those who love embellishment and heavy impact. If all over sequins and sparkle isn’t your vibe, focus on choosing one piece that stands out, like a bag or jacket, and keep the rest of the look all black for a polished take on this style.
In keeping with all things female, but neatly merging the two is Symbol of Femininity. However rather than harking back to your childhood this is about embracing all things womanly. Nipped in waists and textural fabrics combine to create a sleek and elegant look. If your not sure where to start, a good pencil skirt is a strong staple for building this look, pair it a minimalist top to emphasis the classic hour-glass shape and finish with a tailored jacket.
If femininity isn’t your bag, it’s time to break down those gender divides and embrace some androgyny. Buck the trend by focusing on precise tailoring, checks, and straight lines. Top it all off with some oversized outwear and you are good to go. The key to this look is to keep it casual, don’t go overboard with hair or make-up, think more rolled out of bed rather than head full of rollers.
Street style is one pervasive idea that seems to pop up every so often, and fans can rejoice as now it’s getting an upmarket twist. To nail this look think chic and laidback, mix silhouettes, oversized tees with slogans and baggy proportions. Love them, or hate them, Vetements should be your go-to for trend inspiration.
With GirlCrew going global, we were thrilled to see this included and in a non-cultural appropriation-ey way. To get this right, mix unexpected prints and fabrics in unusual ways, don’t fret over colour combinations, and think layers. Playing with depth and texture is a great way to nod to this style if a head to toe look is a little daunting. If all else fails go totally all out like this glorious Prada shoot.
If you’d like to test out any of these styles and give yourself a bit of fashion pep, pop over to our Facebook page where we are running a competition to win a €100 Brown Thomas voucher courtesy of Cameo Communications. #spon
