Le Galaxie have always been very vocal when it comes to social issues in Ireland, frontman Michael Pope sets out why he is ardently pro-choice.
The right to free, safe and legal abortion is a hugely important issue to me, as it should be for anyone in this country who cares about equality, bodily autonomy and the safety of our citizens. It’s another stepping stone out of the darkness and ignorance cultivated by the Catholic church and regressive patriarchy that have had a stranglehold on our development as a nation.
The ignorant fought against a woman’s right to vote, against an adult couples right to divorce and against same sex couples right to marriage. They lost then and they will again. We need you. We need the vocal and visible support of ALL those who believe in accepting the world the way it is and ending Ireland’s treatment of women as second class citizens.

As we’ve said all along, the aim of this series is to be a starting point for conversation. To cut through some of noise, and to highlight just some of the different reasons people have for supporting the pro-choice movement. We’re at a crossroads in Irish history, and have the power to enact an enormous change in our society. If any of the thoughts in this series have resonated with you, then start talking about them with your friends and family. Discussing these issues is the first step. I’d also encourage you to get out and vote. If are unsure whether you are registered to vote or not, make sure you check the register.
