Meet GirlCrew Cork member, Dionne Irwin, of of Total Alignment with Dionne
We love hearing stories about women who have forged their own path, particularly if that journey has had lots of twists and turns! Dionne Irwin, GirlCrew Cork, is one such member who has lived a full life that includes stints in Scotland, Norway, and Austrailia. Oringially a qualified engineer with a background in oil and gas, Dionne was quickly snapped up and landed a job offshore. Depsite having worked hard to achieve this, Dionne didn’t feel fulfilled and by the time she was 30 she realised it was time to make a change.
“I reached 30 realising that engineering was not the career for me…and returned to education in Health & Lifestyle Coaching and Hatha Yoga.” This interest in a more health and wellbeing had initially taken hold while Dionne was in her 20’s, and a decade later she was keen to dive in and learn as much as she could, training with both an Austrailian Yoga school and with the Irish Insitute of Nutrition and Health. And just this year, she founded her business Total Alingment with Dionne. “What I mean by ‘Total Alignment’ is bringing everything that is necessary in life together so we can care for ourselves and enjoy life – health, lifestyle and movement. I offer Health and Lifestyle consultations which gives guidance, support and a positive way of approaching our everyday life.”
Dionne aims to help clients alleviate their daily stress and bring balance to their body through diet and movement, and by helping to the mind to relax. This approach allows you to reap the full beneifts and face life’s challenges in a more positive way. “I currently offer gentle hatha yoga and gentle vinyasa yoga. I also studied to teach pre/post-natal yoga and yoga for children & teenagers. In the future, I wish to introduce power yoga and chair yoga (this is available to everyone – office workers, people with mobility issues and older aged people). 1. What is the best thing about your role?
The best thing is the ability to offer people the opportunity to work on their health, develop their lifestyle, and to bring a gentle but effective way of movement into their lives. I have the ability to introduce yoga nidra and meditation for relaxation. I am preparing courses on mindfulness and self-aligning (self-energy & yoga) courses. With all this, I get to primarily work from home while giving someone the possibilities of one to one classes/ consultations, on skype or small groups.
2. What did you find most challenging about it?
Confidence! The hidden hurdle of believing in myself! Knowing that with my background and studies I can be a positive influence on others.
3. What is your proudest work related achievement to date?
My own life because it was my own lessons, studies and work that has brought me to my own business – Through struggles, self-doubt and unsettlement that were present in my life, like many others can face on a daily basis, I have and continue to aim to be a walking billboard for clients that it is possible to achieve dreams and be healthy as we continue to age!
4. What would be your one tip to others who want to get involved in this industry?
Do it for yourself first and foremost – it is your dream and it is an opportunity to develop yourself and also the lives of others.
5. What would be your motto in life, and in work?
Compassion and empathy is the first and foremost! Also, changing an age old saying: I am here for a good time & a long time!
