“Things will never be perfect and the timing will never be quite right. If you really want to do it, then go ahead and get started”
Meet founder and director of Suzhong Consulting Limited, GirlCrew Hong Kong Member, Susanne Schutz
Here at GirlCrew HQ we love to hear about women who took the plunge to enter industries and roles that have been traditionally dominated by men; and GirlCrew Hong Kong member, Susanne Schutz, is one such lady! Having lived in Asia for the past 20 years Susanne got bored of the daily grind in business and management consultancy so she “…decided to take a sabbatical and study with a Feng Shui Grandmaster in Malaysia (one of the top 3 Feng Shui masters currently practising in Asia). Once I graduated from his academy, I opened my own Classical Feng Shui consulting company in Hong Kong.”
Practiced all over Asia, Feng Shui is a philosophical system of harmonizing the self and your surroundings. With its origins dating as far back as c. 3500-3000 BC, this practice has been primarily male-led for centuries. So, for Susanne, breaking into this area is a great source of pride “there are only a handful of women working as professional Classical Feng Shui consultants in Asia, and even fewer of them are non-Asian, since knowledge of written and spoken Chinese is a pre-requisite for this profession. I have studied Mandarin Chinese since the age of 15 and I am currently the only Western Feng Shui consultant operating out of Hong Kong.”
Her practice is up and thriving, and with a range of services for residential and commercial properties, Feng Shui talks and workshops we’re sure her hard work will continue to pay off. Susanne also offers Feng Shui hikes through Central and the New Territories, which sounds like a great way to spend your time.
1. What is the best thing about running your own business?
Being free and able to follow my passion.
2. What did you find most challenging about it?
Financial insecurity and client acquisition; but also accepting that many people think I should have stayed in my previous career (business and management consulting) rather than making such a drastic career and life change.
3. What is your proudest business achievement to date?
The fact that I actually have Chinese clients! This is extremely unusual, as most local Chinese people prefer to go the traditional/conservative way and engage a local Chinese Feng Shui consultant.
4. What would be your one tip to others who want to set up their own business?
Things will never be perfect and the timing will never be quite right. If you really want to do it, then go ahead and get started – everything else will fall into place.
5. What would be your motto in life, and in business?
Follow your passion – and trust that it will lead you to success.
