“When I heard the Marcliffe was supposed to be closing down (the first time), I decided to venture out on my own. I got in contact with my business partner then [and] started to look into premises, and we opened Azure Health & Beauty in June 2009 – 6 years later and I still love every minute of my job!”

If the GirlCrew groups are anything to go by, the Scots are always up for some fun and love getting glammed up whether it’s for dinner or a night on the town. Keeping the locals of Aberdeen looking dapper is GirlCrew member, Emma Burnett, co-owner of Azure Health & Beauty. For Emma, the glam-life has always held a lot of appeal – “I have always been a people person and knew when I left school that I wanted to do something in the beauty industry [so] I went to Aberdeen College and completed a HND in Beauty Therapy. It was hard work but I loved every minute of it and met a good bunch of girls while studying.”
After completing her studies, Emma was lucky to land a job at the 5 star luxury Marcliffe Hotel & Spa. It was here that Emma really got stuck in and was able to build on the skills that she had gotten through college “I loved it! I went through extensive massage & facial training, which is my favourite treatment to do.” Her love for the job meant that she quickly settled in spending the next five years adding to her repertoire, but she also got much more than just experience as she met her now business partner, Sandra Farquhar, there too.
“When I heard the Marcliffe was supposed to be closing down (the first time) I decided to venture out on my own. I got in contact with my business partner then [and] started to look into premises, and we opened Azure Health & Beauty in June 2009 – 6 years later and I still love every minute of my job!” The company boasts an incredibly wide range of treatments from shellac nails to skin rejuvenation, from pregnancy massage to chocolate body treatments, hair removal and private spa parties. Emma will also be hosting a special open night so GirlCrewers can pop by and see what Azure has to offer while enjoying some nibbles and bubbles, so keep an eye on the events tab for more details and a special GirlCrew discount on services!
1. What is the best thing about your role?
Being my own boss, meeting a variety of different people every day, and seeing satisfied customers leave my shop with a smile on their face at the end of each day.
2. What did you find most challenging about it?
For me is building up a constant clientele, keeping them coming through the door as well as attracting new customers with innovative products & services.
3. What is your proudest work related achievement to date?
My proudest working achievement would have to be that I am still in business 6 years later. I am proud every day of the work I do, so still having my own shop through the hard times in this competitive industry is definitely my proudest achievement.
4. What would be your one tip to others who want to get involved in this industry?
Is to study hard, practice, practice & practice!! Especially everyday treatments such as waxing and massage; this will increase your competency levels and in turn make you a more confidant therapist. Also, to keep updating your skills in this ever changing market to stay ahead if the competition.
5. What would be your motto in life, and in work?
Be positive, persistent and patient!
