“Be true to yourself. Find what you love and have the courage to build your life around that.”
Meet Musician and member of GirlCrew Dublin, Carol Ann Flanagan
The first thing you notice about GirlCrew Dublin member Carol-Ann Flanagan is her amazing blonde hair and gorgeous smile, but beneath her wit and charm lies a hot-bed of musical talent. Since she was young she has been carefully perfecting her craft and today she boasts an incredible singing voice. Her style has been compared to artists such as Diana Krall, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, and while their influence can be clearly heard she has cultivated her “own unique style”. Ranging from smoky to a clearly colourful voice, Carol-Ann blends her wide range with disciplined technique and improvisation. Scatting through versions of some of the most well- known and loved jazz songs she adds a quality and edge all her own, “ensuring there is never a dull moment in [her] lively performances”.
Although jazz is her “passion” her talents mean that she is capable of performing a wide variety of styles and is comfortable jumping on stage to sing along with a lone guitarist or full band. Her formative years were spent in Germany where she was lucky enough to train with some of the country’s best jazz and classical teachers. This obviously set her on the right path as over the years she has worked with many great musicians, as well as full orchestras and in Broadway musicals. This has also led to performances across Europe including Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Gibraltar, and Spain. So, if you’re in GrilCrew Dublin keep an eye on our events listings as we’ve heard rumours of jazz brunches, and once she gets back from touring we will be sure to convince her to revive them.
1. What is the best thing about your role?
I just love singing! It’s very creative and rewarding to be able to express yourself through music, I think it gives you the power to be your true self.
2. What did you find most challenging about it?
Getting gigs can be challenging so you always have to be on the look out and put in the foot work, knocking on doors etc.
3. What is your proudest work related achievement to date?
Well, the last album I did “MEZCLA” is one of them. It has managed to reach the attention of radio stations as far as Texas and Illinois, Nashville and more – but also working with some of the best musicians who helped me to create it.
4. What would be your one tip to others who want to get involved in this industry?
Be true to yourself. Find what you love and have the courage to build your life around that.
5. What would be your motto in life, and in work?
Be passionate about what you are doing to be the best at whatever you do and remember, “What goes around, Comes around” so always be kind.
