How To Make Friends in Austin

Austin is known as the big city with a small town heart, but it can be tricky to find your feet. We’ve got you covered.

Austin is one of our favourite US cities because it has such a great vibe, quirky architecture, and a really relaxed feel. With so much to do and see, this is the perfect opportunity to try new things and we’ve made life here even easier with our list on how to make new friends in Austin.

South Congress Hotel

On the first Thursday of every month, the South Congress Hotel host a big party with musicians and an all night happy hour. You can even treat yourself to some artisanal ice-cream. Or if you prefer to relax and meditate, they host spiritual Sundays where you can unwind with a yoga class.

Go Salsa Dancing

Esquina Tango is a non profit dance studio by day, offering a variety of dance classes such as tango, samba and salsa aerobics, for all stages of dancer. They also host lots of community events focused on Latin American cultures. And if you would like to learn another language, they teach Spanish and Portuguese too. This is a great way to make new friends and get out of your comfort zone by learning something new.

Movie Party

Have you ever loved a movie so much you want to be in it? Well the Drafthouse gives you that chance to do just that at their movie parties. At their movie party series you can sing-along/quote-along to your favourite movies. Best of all, you won’t be disturbing others as everyone is encouraged to join in. There are always props provided with your ticket so you can wave a sword in the air along with Inigo Montoya during The Princess Bride, play an air guitar along with Scotty Pilgrim, or even enjoy custom scratch and sniff cards that let you smell the manure when Biff’s car gets covered in Back To The Future. Yum!

Go on a Food Tour

Food equals friendship and a walking tour of all the best spots to eat in Austin is guaranteed to help you make new friends. Austin Eats have lots of tours to choose from including happy hour, food trucks, brunches and more! There guides know which are the best spots to hit and you’ll try lots of delicious food on the way.

Tipster is a walking tour that afterwards, you pay what you like. Its that simple. Their motto is that if you make an experience enjoyable for people, good things will happen. And judging by their Instagram alone, the walks look super fun. And what’s great is you can go on your own but are put in a group so the perfect opportunity to meet and chat to new people. There are lots of tours to choose from, I recommend the East Side Art tour, perfect for those selfies and group shots.
