How To Build Your Personal Brand

Brand your way to success. This may seem like an odd statement to make, but anyone can achieve a success with the right personal brand.

A brand is more than pretty logos, colors and slogans. Any type of brand reflects the ethos of what it represents. Your personal brand, therefore, represents who you are at your core and the passion that drives you. These 5 strategies will help you use your personal brand to carve your destiny.

1. Define Who You Are

Who you are isn’t defined by your name and profession. It reaches deep into your soul to unleash your values, interests and the destiny you want to carve out for your life. Grab a pen and paper and write your answers to the following questions:

  • What are your 3 core values?
  • How do you live your life to display these values?
  • How would you state your purpose in life using one sentence?

Your answers to these 3 questions will help you create an all-encompassing definition. An example is shown below.

I believe in living a life of integrity, respect, and dependability. My daily mission is to be honest with and fair to everyone I meet, show respect even when none is shown to me, and complete all tasks given to me efficiently. I believe my purpose in life is to express my core values through inspiring others through writing and helping others create true financial freedom.

Once you’ve that set out, it’s worthwhile to think about where you want to be. And crucially, how you’ll get there. For example, if you’ve just started a new career but would like to be a department director think about the external skills/role requirements you’ll need to fulfill. Mapping these out will give you a clearer sense of where you are now, and what you need to achieve to reach your goals. Chances are you’re in a lot better stead than you think.

2. Create a 5-Year Plan

Vision forms the pivotal point of branding. Your defined purpose helps shape your vision.  Think about the purpose you articulated in the previous section. Use the following outline to create a 5- year plan that sets you on the path towards accomplishing this vision. Map out our goals and the targets required to reach them. This is just a sample, but working backwards is a great way to figure what steps you need to make to get to where you want to be.

Revisiting and revising are crucial aspects of planning. Your 5-year plan should be consistently evaluated throughout each year to ensure that you stay on track or make adjustments if necessary. Now that your 5-year plan has helped you create a vision for your life, it’s time to focus on how you present yourself to the world.

3. Develop a Strong Social Media Presence

Every aspect of your life should reflect the vision you’ve carved out for yourself. Your social media profiles, for instance, should be free of shaming others and meddling in the affairs of others if you commit to live a life of integrity and respect.

Your social media profiles should also reflect the passion that defines your life’s purpose. The example given in the first section defined a person who wants to be a writer and a financial planner. This person’s social media profiles should reflect these passions. This is especially true for LinkedIn.

4. Become an Expert in Your Space

YouTube influencers become success stories because they take the time to become experts in their niches. Consider Yuya, one of YouTube’s beauty blogger sensations. Her beauty vlog has over 20 million subscribers because she presents useful videos that showcase her beauty expertise. We’re not suggesting that everyone will become a YouTube sensation. However, using the internet to portray your love for life and the talents you have positions you for new opportunities.

Time is your greatest asset. Invest your time wisely by getting the knowledge and experience you need to become an expert. Don’t be afraid to explore and put yourself out there a bit. The right person may one day see what you’re doing and say, “Hey, this girl is on to something. Maybe we can work together.”

5. Putting it All Together

Your personal brand is the definition of who you are. It inspires confidence and portrays to the world that you know what you stand for and what you want to accomplish. Define who you are, create a 5-year plan, develop a strong social media presence, and become an expert in your space. These 5 strategies are all you really need to truly craft a strong personal brand.

Don’t forget that you don’t have to do any of this alone. Asking for help and reaching out to others is a great way to get support, and build your network in the process.
