If you wake up in the morning and feel a sense of dread about the day ahead, spending 5-10 minutes meditating can help. It can make you feel more control of the day and ease the anxiety that is within you. Apps like Headspace and Calm can help teach you how to meditate. Meditation can be easy to incorporate into your day if you do it first thing in the morning, even just sitting on the edge of your bed. You don’t need to have an elaborate set up with incense and candles, you just need to try and do it consistently.

Hang out with happy people

Being surrounded by toxic people can have a major impact on your happiness. Their negativity can be contagious. We all know someone that seems to light up a room with their positivity. Try and spend more time with people like that. You’ll soon find yourself adopting a similar mindset and outlook as them.

Make new friends

If you don’t have many positive people in your circle of friends, it’s time to make new ones. Download the GirlCrew app and see what events are taking place near you. Going to events and enjoying new experiences will also help you to be a happier person!

Send a thank you card

When was the last time that you sent a card to someone, for no other reason than for being a good friend? Why not send a thank you card to someone in your life that means a lot to you. Thank them for all the good things they have brought you and the happy memories that you share with them. We all love to receive unexpected post (except when it’s a bill!) So put a smile on someone else’s face with a lovely card or postcard.

Listen to happy music or watch funny videos

The music we listen to can have a major impact on our mood. Why not create a playlist that includes all the songs that put you in a good mood? If you are struggling for ideas, this is a great place to start. You can also create a playlist on YouTube of videos that have you laughing until you have a pain in your side. Next time you feel down, listening or watching these playlists should help improve your mood.

Cook something with your hands

If you live on takeaways and ready meals, maybe try and cook something from scratch. It doesn’t have to be gourmet, even a simple sponge cake is enough to create. Baking something can give you a real sense of accomplishment that can boost your happiness. Brownie points if you then give the cake as a gift to someone for being a good friend! Or if it all goes wrong and the cake is a disaster, just laugh it off and share on Snapchat. Your cake disaster might make your friends laugh, and hence put them in a good mood.

Take a bath

A little bit of self-care can make a huge improvement in your mood. Why not schedule some ‘me-time’ and pour yourself a glass of wine, light some candles, put on a face mask and relax in the bath.

Keep a diary

There are many benefits to keeping a journal, most importantly, it’s a place to help you work through your worries. If you are feeling anxious, spend 10-15 minutes just journaling your thoughts. Often just acknowledging the thoughts you have, is enough to improve your mood.

  2. I absolutely agree with all of these points – for me meditation and exercise really help and weirdly I sent a thank you card to a friend for no reason a few weeks ago! It was a lovely thing to do and she was so happy to receive it. Making others happy is a great feeling. Thanks for sharing.

  5. Happiness is my number one goal at this point in my life. I’m glad I came across this article. I’ve spend most of my life stressing about work, and the little things that didn’t make sense. Now, it’s time to let go of the little worrysome things, and be happy.

  6. I love Buddifhy its a great app for meditation. There has also been studies linked to spending 10 minutes in a green space and a reduction in stress so I try to get out for a short while everyday!

  10. OHH I love this list of how to be happier! I really wish I could make new friends, but sadly I feel too old to be bothered and it’s so hard to find people that you REALLY connect with. I’m blessed to at least have a solid group of friends since childhood.

  11. I love that your first point was meditation. I’ve been having to start meditating the past month or so for my anxiety and it is the best thing for calming me down, making me feel relaxed and centered. I do also watch a lot of funny YouTube videos too if I’m not feeling so perky.
