Part 3: How upfront should you be on your LinkedIn profile?

Now that you’re beginning to get to grips with the shiny world of LinkedIn and you’re filling in all the sections, it is likely that you will hit the wall. At some stage while you are deciding between arrows or stars to highlight your skills you’ll begin to realise that you aren’t quite sure how truthful you should be. Should you just throw caution to the wind and scream that you are sick of your job and looking for a new position, or cautiously suggest that you are open to offers? This is a tricky position to be in, on one hand you want to look eager but at the same time you don’t want to burn any bridges. It’s kind of like that last slice of pizza, if you keep it you might regret it but if you throw it away there’s a chance you’ll want it later. Only this time the pizza is paying your bills and keeping a roof over your head – yup, this is one serious decision to make. But don’t worry, this happens to us all, and in interest of allowing you to have your pizza and eat it too, we put your questions to Holly.

How upfront should you be on your profile, do you include that you looking for new jobs or should this just be the highlights of your career?

Holly says: I get asked this all the time, and it shows a real fear amongst job seekers in letting others know they’re on the job market. For one, if you haven’t told your employer you’re looking for a new job, then obviously discretion is advised. Ensure your personal email is used as your primary email within LinkedIn and other social networks, and perhaps invite people to contact you via your preferred social channels like Twitter, or give your email address in the “Advice for Contacting” section.

By having a full profile detailing the successes and highlights of your career to date, and inviting people to contact you, that says enough to recruiters. If your profile comes up in their search for candidates like you, and they like what they read, they’ll contact you.

However, if you’re currently unemployed, will be/ have been made redundant, contract is coming to an end, or have told your employer you’re on the job market, then put this in your headline “Actively seeking new opportunities”. Hiring managers and recruiters are immediately drawn to profiles which state this, and will often have a look at your profile because of this. There’s no shame in seeking a new job. Don’t think your friends and family will think less of you in any way. It’s the complete opposite. Your friends and family want to help, and will look out for job announcements everywhere they go. They’re your job-seeking army.
