Second stop on our World Tour is Austin, capital of Texas and the fourth-most populated city in the state. Austin is known for its alternative, trendy nature and famous for its ‘Keep Austin Weird’ slogan. The motto was used to promote Austin’s eccentricity, diversity and to support local independent businesses. Apparently, the phrase was coined by a local Austin Community College librarian and his wife. The most important bit of all of this? Austin’s weird in the wonderful way, not in the creepy weird way.
GirlCrew is the easiest way to make new friends, and set up specifically for women aged about 25+. The majority of our members are in or about 30. Because it’s hard to make friends when you’re no longer in school or uni! How it works is you join the group for your city, eg. GirlCrew Austin, post what you want to go do, eg a picnic in the park, and then head along with anyone else from your local crew who’s interested. Or have a scroll through events already suggested and pop along to one of them! Simples, but it makes finding partners in crime for adventure so much easier. Part of our little virtual world tour is to show how these groups are making cities more fun, and less lonely and attempting to spread the word about them for others who want in. If you’re reading this, you’ve already missed the happy hour meet up going on today 😉
So what are some things you can enjoy in Awesome Austin whether with the crew, solo or with friends? Whether you’ve lived there for a million years, or just moved into town. Here are a few little options.
1. Get Cultured
Check out some of Austin’s art scene. An art trail takes place annually if you happen to be about in November, but there are also great sites listing some of the top spots to fit in. Or, simply ask the girls in the group if they know of any great little shows coming up.
2. The Board Walk at Lady Bird Lake
This $28 million project features over 300 piers, 2,200 pre-cast concrete deck planks, 13,000 LED lights, 1.3 million pounds of structural steel, 7 viewing areas, ADA accessible pier, and a new trailhead restroom along the 7,250 feet boardwalk! Do it by day, or by evening/night to enjoy the LEDs and it’s open until midnight so there’s time. Also, along the walk you’ll find artwork created by Ken Little. See if you can spot all of the 36 cast-bronze belts!
3. Hamilton Pool
As the weather hots up, pack up a picnic, and some cool beverages, get your gang together and head out to Hamilton Pool, an incredibly beautiful spot to chill. The ‘grotto’ was formed when the dome of an underground river collapsed, leaving a ring of waterfalls and and the perfect swimming pool. We are not jealous at all Austin.* If nature isn’t your cup of tea, see if any of your new friends have a pool and hint that they invite you around. Offer to bring snacks, drinks or dinner.
4. Brunch at Bangers
It’s located on Rainy St, has 103 beers on tap, 30ish homemade sausages, an off-leash dog park and a live music stage. Also, these are there mamosas.
Get out there and do an activity. Life can’t be all lying by natural waterfalls and drinking giant Mimosas. Austin has heaps to offer from golf, to painting parties. Practice your swing at Top Golf, best value is if you rent a bay with some friends. And if sports is not your thing, check out the Painting with a Twist classes. You can bring food, wine, and banter. That’s gotta help the inspiration flow right?
Next stop on the #GC40 World Tour? Barcelona….coming at you tomorrow. Got a tip for the trip? Shout where’s great to eat, what’s cool to see and do and we’ll see if we can fit in a mention.
