#GC40 Around the World in 40 Days: Beautiful Barcelona

Make Friends in Barcelona

Barcelona is one of our newest GirlCrew groups and one we’re excited to see grow and take off. So if you know anyone based there who needs some new pals the odd time, do let them know we’re there waiting to give them the most fun summer of their life.

A quick dip into the GirlCrew Trips & Travel group provided me with some amazing recommendations instantly, both from those who love the city, and a local shared her secrets too. I also dug deep into my own fond memories of it from years ago! #TakeMeBackPlease

Culture

There’s so much here by way of art and architecture that you’re spoiled for choice. My own favourite is Park Güell. An incredible park designed by Antoni Gaudí i Cornet, a Spanish Catalan architect. It’s all curving waves in benches and arches and beautiful coloured tile mosaics covering them. I vaguely remember some excellent busking and dancing going on in some shaded spot too. If you’re a big fan of his work after seeing the park (or even before you go), you can also visit some of his buildings. If you’re still hungry for more art, check out the Picasso art museum, Barça museum or take a drive out of town to visit the Salvador Dali museum in Girona. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. In need of more architecture drooling (this city don’t quit, right?) take a stroll through Barrio Gotique, the Gothic quarter.

What to Do in Barcelona

Out & About

While Barcelona isn’t well known for it’s beaches, it has them, and they’re awesome, they were recommended by fellow crewers as being a great break to chill for a bit on a trip to the city too.

Not one for sand? No worries, because you can alternatively take a stroll in the mountains. Ask around about guided walks as there are fabulous ones where you can choose to pay what you think it was worth at the end.

If it’s city strolling you’re after, perforated with coffee stops and browsing, a simple walk down Las Ramblas should suit you to a tee.

If you prefer to travel by wheels, check out Donkey Bike Tours who offer a slightly more alternative, less touristy trip around the city. Or hop onto a cable car and take in the views, the sights and the sounds without having to consider your safety as much as you might on a bike. Recommended GirlCrew tip – get some food and cocktails at the place at the top! “Best Pina Colada I ever had.”

Last but not least, try and get yourself some tickets to a match in Barcelona’s football stadium. An amazing experience and recommended by more than one of our girls.

Food & Drinks

If you’re a beer fan, a friend of one of our girls recently opened a brewery in the city that also has it’s own cool bar. Garage Beer Co, which apparently really does look like a garage, is cozy, with good music and a nice vibe. It’s already received quite a nice few reviews too and if you’re hungry, their chefs are ready for you.

Secondly, this is our local gal’s favourite bar. She’s told us tourists don’t normally know about it so let’s keep this secret between us 😉  Bosc de les Fades, it’s located close to Ramblas inside the building of Wax Museum! It’s designed to feel like you’re in a dark forest, and according to Barcelona.com  they sometimes turn off the lights and you can hear the rain and thunder! Pro tip – don’t arrive too late as it fills up.

Making Friends in the City

Whether you’re visiting, new in town, or have lived in beautiful Barcelona your whole life, being stuck for some friends to head off doing all this fun stuff with is a challenge for pretty much everyone at some point. Don’t you just hate it when friends don’t drop what they’re doing to come do exactly what you want to do? 😉 GirlCrew was set up to solve exactly that problem and is one of the easiest way to make new friends. It’s for women aged about 25+ but the majority of our members are in or about 30+. All you have to do is join the group for your city, post what you want to do, and then enjoy the fun of heading off on an adventure with some friendly new faces. Simples.
