These days most of live a largely sedentary lifestyle; with a quick stroll to the shop being the height of our daily exercise. While this routine is very easy to slip into, the lure of the couch is hard to resist after a long day, it’s important that we break these bad habits and add a bit of flexibility into our lives. Office jobs in particular can play havoc with your posture, but thankfully we’ve found just the woman to get you feeling fit and energised again.

Pilates instructor and GirlCrew Dublin member, Jess Gormley, brought her love of living an active lifestyle back from her time abroad and is now sharing this with the people of Dublin. “I lived in New Zealand for 3 years and it is definitely where I got my passion for living an active and healthy lifestyle. It was here I fell in love with reformer pilates and I began practising almost every day. On my return to Ireland in 2014 I decided I wanted to pass that love and enthusiasm for pilates onto others so I trained as a pilates instructor.”

This training allowed Jess to be move into the fitness industry full time and earlier this year she took the plunge, leaving the world of cubicles and screens behind for one filled with rings, mats, and reformers. “It was a bit scary making the change but I knew that pilates was what I really wanted to do and if I didn’t give it a shot, I would only regret it. I haven’t looked back since and feel incredibly lucky to work alongside the best instructors in Ireland. I’m a mat and reformer pilates instructor, and I’m also qualified in pre/post-natal pilates and pilates for children.”

And it’s not the external benefits that Jess helps her clients with, as the old saying goes – a healthy body is a healthy mind. “Through my classes I aim to combine the mental and physical benefits of pilates to leave my clients feeling strong in mind and body, as well as correcting movement dysfunctions for injury prevention and rehabilitation.” So, if you’re looking for a full body workout that can help your breathing, postures, flexibility, and give you a core of steel then pilates might just be answer.

1) What is the best thing about your role?

 Making a positive difference in other people’s lives. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing someone leave the studio happier than when they came in.

2) What did you find most challenging about it?

 Overcoming my fear of public speaking and self doubt.  Before i started teaching you couldn’t have paid me to talk in front of a group of people. I still get nervous before classes but it gets easier each time.

3) What is your proudest work related achievement to date?

 Apart from joining Platinum Pilates and working alongside some of the most talented instructors in the country, it would have to be teaching at Wellfest this year. It was an absolute honour to teach alongside some of the biggest names in the Health & Fitness Industry.

4) What would be your one tip to others who want to get involved in this industry?

 If it is something you are truly passionate about then do it but you have to be willing to put in the hard work and make sacrifices. I think sometimes people think it’s a bit of a handy number but they don’t realise all the work you have to put in to class planning, self practice and continuing education. Just like any other industry if you want to succeed and be at the top of your game, you have to put in the hard yards. If you absolutely live and breath it and want to share that passion with others, then go for it!

5) What would be your motto in life, and in work?

6) What’s your favourite thing about being in GirlCrew?

 Women empowering women. There is endless kindness, positivity and support between strangers. The world needs more of that.
